Today, Tuesday 10 September 2024, marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about suicide, breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and uniting people across the globe in a common cause: preventing suicide. This year’s theme, “Creating Hope Through Action,” encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to take proactive steps to support those struggling with their mental health.
Every year, close to 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide. That’s one life lost every 40 seconds, and for every suicide, there are many more attempts. These tragic events affect not only individuals but families, friends, and entire communities. Despite the devastating impact, suicide remains a topic that many find difficult to talk about due to the stigma associated with mental health.
Creating Hope Through Action
The theme “Creating Hope Through Action” reminds us that everyone can make a difference. It is a call for action, encouraging small, meaningful steps to provide support, foster understanding, and build connections that can save lives. Here are some ways you can contribute to suicide prevention:
Reach Out: If someone you know is going through a difficult time, reach out. You don’t need to have all the answers – just being there to listen and showing that you care can make all the difference.
Start Conversations: Open dialogues about mental health and suicide in your community, workplace, or family. Talking about these issues helps break down the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help.
Be Aware of the Signs: Understanding the warning signs of suicide – such as feelings of hopelessness, withdrawal, or talking about death – enables you to provide timely support and encourage professional help.
Support Mental Health Organisations: Contributing time or donations to mental health services or suicide prevention programs can help ensure that those in need have access to resources, care, and community support.
Take Care of Yourself: Prioritising your mental health is equally important. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or hopeless, reach out to a friend, family member, or professional. You matter, and asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
The MOFS team is actively supporting mental health awareness and suicide prevention. We’re engaging with our community to foster open conversations and provide resources.
Together, we’re creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
Let’s make a difference today. Every small action counts and can create a ripple effect of hope.

How We Can Make a Difference
Communities play a critical role in suicide prevention by fostering environments where individuals feel supported and connected. By coming together – whether it’s through organising events, participating in community programs, or simply being there for one another – together we can create a world where hope is stronger than despair.
This World Suicide Prevention Day let’s work together to save lives. Every action, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect of hope. Whether it’s a conversation, a gesture of kindness, or providing information about available resources, we can all play a part in preventing suicide.
Let’s create hope through action, today and every day.
